This Sky Lakes Wilderness hike approaches these waterfalls from the northwest side of the wilderness right along the southwest boundary of Crater Lake National Park along Red Blanket Creek. Unfortunately, a number of severe fires, both old and more recent, have left the area severely scarred and the trail more challenging than we anticipated. Deep rocky ravines filled with charred timber where the trail gets lost more than a few times were part of the concern. The whole route is in bad need of maintenance. But the falls were stunning and the late October colors were truly golden.
Access: From Medford head north on Highway 62, past the community of Shady Cove, then turn right off the highway to get to the town of Prospect. Take a right into town and go past the Prospect Hotel, taking a left onto Red Blanket Road. At the sign for the Butte Falls - Prospect Highway, turn left onto an easy gravel road which is the continuation of Red Blanket Road. Follow it all the way end, about 11 miles to the trailhead.
